It can be tiring sending dozens of job applications only to know that a human may never read them. An automated application system (ATS) allows companies to read through many more job applications, but unfortunately, this is not through human eyes. An ATS may skip over great resumes because it did not appeal to their system. With more and more companies using ATS in their hiring process, creating a resume that will work with these programs is crucial.
Here are some ways to find success when dealing with automated application systems:
Keep Resume Simple
The number one tip we can give is simplicity. You can have the fanciest, most professional-looking resume ever, but that will not matter if the ATS cannot decipher the content. Use large and clean fonts, use simple language, include a healthy amount of spacing between sections, etc. Be sure to include a skills section that goes over your various skills and accolades. We do this since these will include important keywords that are important to your industry. When an ATS sees these keywords, it increases your chances of getting a positive rating for your resume.
Do Not Forget About Recruiters
We cannot simply optimize our resume for an ATS since a human recruiter may also read our resume. We want our resume to be simple for the ATS but not so simple that it looks unprofessional to a human recruiter. It is a tricky balancing act to maintain, so if you need more help, book a resume revision appointment with us!
Send Follow-Up Message to Recruiters
Another opportunity to send a personalized note is a follow-up message to the recruiter. These messages can be sent through email, LinkedIn, etc. Use this opportunity to expand on details included in your resume and thank them for reviewing your application. This message should be brief; recruiters do not have time to read an essay. Sending a follow-up message also shows you are more dedicated than other applicants and can increase your chances of being hired.
Stay Positive
While it may seem like automated application systems are here to hurt us, they are a valuable tool for recruiters. These systems allow recruiters to go through many more applications, which increases your chances of your resume being noticed. Staying positive while going through the job hiring process is crucial for maintaining a level head and staying motivated!
