Day after day, you send dozens of applications, knowing that you will most likely only ever receive short, automated responses denying you an interview. Going through this song and dance over and over again eventually demoralizes you, making you not want to bother applying anymore. These feelings are understandable, but we cannot be bogged down by them. Here are some tips for staying motivated during the job search and increasing our chances of being hired!
Create Schedule
Laying down a schedule of when you will apply for jobs and how many you will apply for each day helps create a routine to follow that will increase productivity. When nothing forces you to apply, you put it off since you can theoretically apply for jobs anytime. But procrastinating is a big no-no that we want to avoid at all costs. Creating and following a plan feels like a significant accomplishment, which then motivates you to apply for more jobs.
Seek Feedback
It can be challenging to stay motivated when you are not even landing any interviews, let alone getting hired. If that is the case, it may be time to seek feedback from friends or colleagues. Gaining a second pair of eyes to look at your resume can help show the flaws that can be fixed. It is also good to hear words of encouragement from your friends telling you that you will find a job and should not give up. Take Breaks
We want to ensure we apply for enough jobs but do not want to overexert ourselves. If you do not take enough breaks, you will burn out and lose all motivation to continue the job search. Trying to apply for as many jobs as humanly possible leads to higher chances of errors slipping through and lowering your chances of being hired. You may need to find a job quickly and feel you cannot afford to take any breaks, but even taking ten to fifteen minute breaks can significantly help your mental health.
Be Positive
It can be hard to stay motivated! With every day that passes with no hiring, more and more pressure is placed upon you. This feeling of pressure will eventually turn into feelings of negativity. And you know what? The job search can be frustrating at times. Yes, it is frustrating when you thought you nailed the interview but did not get hired, or when a recruiter ghosts you, or a job description is misleading, but you must stay positive. Staying positive is the number one advice we can offer to stay motivated.
