You have finally been hired! But after a few days, something feels off. This job is not what you expected. You may be doing tasks you are not prepared for; you may not be contributing in the ways you want to. Now you feel the rug has been pulled from under you. Do you quit and restart the job search, or do you endure a job you do not like?
This is a no-win scenario, but we can take steps to prevent this situation:
Ask About Role During Interview
Some think they will look dumb for asking about their potential job during the interview. As long as you demonstrate you know the broad strokes of the position, the employer will not judge you for asking for an in-depth breakdown. The question can be worded as such, “What does an average day look like in this position?” An employer will be more than happy to run through this question. The interviewer would prefer asking for clarification during the interview than after hiring you. If you are curious for more interview tips, then check out our interview guide!
Read Employee Testimonials
If reading the job posting does not give enough information, try searching for employee reviews. You can find employee reviews on the company website or on specialty websites specifically for employee reviews. The source that would best know the position would be someone working at that very same position!
Research Company Thoroughly
With remote jobs becoming more prevalent, it is leading to many more scam jobs that seem too good to be true. These scam jobs can come in the form of trying to steal personal information through a fake hiring process, or a pyramid scheme. Be sure to research every organization you apply for, since they may seem legitimate on the surface, but they could be a front for a scam organization. One scam organization may be listed under a dozen different names, so watch out!
Align Expectation with Job Description
Be sure to read the entire job description since the job title may not accurately depict the scope of the position. A dozen listed responsibilities may be listed under just one role, so be sure you are okay with every potential responsibility. Do not just fixate on one responsibility you desire since it may not be a significant part of your day-to-day tasks.
Seek Job Shadowing
For those of you who want to know what a role looks like going in, then consider job shadowing, which is a practice that allows you to directly observe a current employee perform your interested role. While not every organization offers job shadowing, take advantage whenever possible! Like with interviews, feel free to ask questions during your job shadowing period.
Keep on Searching
It is crucial to remain level-headed and not get demotivated when your job does not match your expectations. Keep searching, and you eventually will find a position that is suited for you. Search for your job wisely, and do not mindlessly mass apply for jobs. This may seem like a quick and easy solution, but that only leads to problems down the road. Apply smart, not fast.
