A recurring worry that many have is that their skills will become obsolete, and then they will not be able to find a job. The modern example of this fear is Artificial Intelligence. AI is rapidly evolving and becoming much more prominent in dozens of industries, creating a genuine fear in many people. The unknown is scary, and many fear their skills and education will become irrelevant in a few years.
We cannot predict the future, but we can take precautions to ensure we will always have valuable skills, no matter the industry:
Keep Up with Industry Trends
Worrying about the unknown can be mitigated by keeping a keen eye on industry trends and new technologies. Whatever industry you belong in, follow key figureheads and major organizations to keep up on the latest scoops. We want to stay ahead of the curve and not be caught off-guard by new trends, but be the trendsetters! Keep careful note of what skills you could pick up to expand your career opportunities.
Build Versatile Skill Set
Learning a variety of skills that apply to multiple organizations will always give us more options in the future; we do not want to be a one-trick pony. Being a specialist in a specific skill is fine, but companies highly value versatility. The more skills we have the better, right? Well, we should not overload the number of skills we are trying to learn and spread ourselves too thin, only becoming mediocre at a dozen skills instead of excellent at a few skills. But how do we build up our skill set?
Seek Certifications
Even if you are not getting a formal education, there are always ways to learn more. Plenty of affordable options on the web provide certifications and learning programs. Google and LinkedIn are both easy places to start your search. Any certificate you get is good to put on your LinkedIn or resume, anything helps! No matter what you want to learn, there are always places to learn more.
Attend Career Workshops
Another way to learn more relevant skills is to attend career workshops. These do an excellent job outlining industry trends and what you need to do to become more successful in the future. The people hosting these workshops are some of the most passionate individuals in the industry, so you know you are gaining information from a great source. Find either online or local career workshops and think about attending!
You Have Time
It is easy to see why so many people fear their skills becoming obsolete. The world is changing rapidly, and who knows what the job market will look like in a decade. Even though everything seems to be changing extremely quickly, we still have time to act and build new skills. Even if you are not worried about your skills becoming irrelevant, learning some new skills and expanding your career opportunities does not hurt.
